Risograph Prints
Artist-in-residence
Oddities Prints, Kansas City
2023
For a few months in the Spring of 2023, I was invited to work as an Artist-in-Residence at Oddities Prints in Kansas City. In this residency, I focused on learning Risograph printing technolgy and bringing this unique system of image-making into my own world of extensively colorful, layered works on paper.
Oddities Prints is a Kansas City-based print shop with exceptionally supportive and creative energy. The studio is a local and national go-to for culture makers in music, design, art, and illustration. Jordan Carr and Claire Monroe at Oddities Prints provided a supportive balance of structure and freedom for my time working in the studio. And, most essentially, their playlists and shop dogs are awesome!
This residency provided me a unique experience to learn through both design and hands-on making. I was able to make quick decisions about colors and layers in a responsive way to the prints as they came together. The first print I editioned had 5 layers and colors, but by the time I editioned the last print, I was working with tonal blends and dozens of colors and layers.
As with any print technology I have learned, for me, making prints creates new ways to think about new prints to make.
