The Great Lakes and their beauty and tumultuous history is the inspiration for Unio, an ongoing series of collage works on paper.
In spring 2021 I worked at Good Hart Artist Residency in Good Hart, Michigan. Hosted and supported through this lovely program for two weeks, I was able to immerse in this distinctively lake-oriented environment.
Waves and large bodies of water have always fascinated me. Oceans and lakes need no input from humans to do what they do, day after day, and year after year. One of their many capabilities is to create and share coastlines full of smooth, diverse varieties of rocks which tell the story of earth itself.
As I explored Lake Michigan and Lake Superior, I took in the region’s complicated story and unique geography. The always-weathered beach rocks reminded me of the long summer days of sun in balance with the long winter days of ice in this region, and how the earth, sky and water continually mix and merge together.
My work in the Unio series responds to the idea of slow time, and how cycles and patterns inevitably shape everything.
